Cheer up...


(...the wrath doesn't have to be flying at you)


There are at least three aspects of human activity outside explicit religion* which give us an insight into immortality - or more: make us immortal, albeit temporarily. 

They are: juggling with beauty, which is art; juggling with thoughts, which is philosophy; and clownishly juggling all sorts of awkward stuff (including a fridge), humming the Loony Tunes anthem, occasionally droping a cat and letting a grandma blow up mid-air or fall with a unbecoming (a grandma) thump on our head, which is humour.

Some of you may remember my search for evidence of humour in the Bible. At some point I  even resorted to putting thoughts into St Peter the Apostle's head (forgive me, St Peter; forgive me, my Lord -  it was partly for the cause: to boost readership; and partly for a laugh).

To make up for tinkering with the Good News, I'll remind you of Psalm 2 that shows that the Lord indeed has a sense of humour. 

But, in this instance at least, when he laughs we  tremble:


Why do the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?
2The kings of the earth take their stand
and the rulers gather together
against the Lord
and against his Anointed One.
3Let us break their chains,” they say,
and throw off their fetters.”
4The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
the Lord scoffs at them.
5Then he rebukes them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath, saying...
