Q.E.D.

... "Why not?", I thought, "It is a bit of an odd idea, but if in this way I could prove something - I would dwell later on what it was - about consciousness and freedom, what the heck!", I (nearly) decided. "Foolishly and heroically, I'll do it for truth & for freedom! In front of the girls, in front of Copernicus, in front of the wise men of the Academy, in front of a priest and - if she looked out of her window - a bored secretary of the Institute of Philosophy". I took a deep breath.

But then, just before I was to set off, I looked again into Eve's eyes and noticed something that may have been poorly hidden mischief. And a thought struck me: what if there's another piece of research going on here?

...

I pictured myself emerging victoriously, and Eve whispering discreetly to her fellow-researcher: "Q.E.D."
